Asbestos Inspection and Sampling: MET provides asbestos surveys to comply with the Asbestos Standard for General Industry (29 CFR1910.1001).
The Standard is intended to prevent the inadvertent exposure of employees and the general public to airborne asbestos fibers. This
Standard is enforced by MIOSHA and applies to general housekeeping activities in buildings that contain (or may contain) an asbestos
containing material (ACM). Section (j)(2) of the Standard requires building owners to:
- Building Inspection and Sampling
- Asbestos Removal Contracting
- Air Sampling
- Building Demolition/Renovation Permitting
- Determine the presence, location and quantity of ACM in the building or work site (i.e. conduct an asbestos survey).
- Inform employees
who will perform housekeeping activities in those areas of the presence and location of the ACM that may be contacted/disturbed during
work activities.
- All housekeeping personnel (i.e. mechanical systems workers, electricians, custodians, plumbers, etc.) must be given
an annual asbestos awareness training course as required under 29 CFR 1910.1001(j)(7)(iv).
Building Demolition/Renovation Permitting: MET provides pre-demolition/renovation construction permitting services. The National Emission
Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) requires that any institutional, commercial or industrial structure, installing or
building be thoroughly inspected for asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) prior to demolition/renovation. NESHAP further requires
that a notification be given to a regional NESHAP Coordinator before the building is demolished or renovated if the amount of ACMs
contained in the building are above a specific "cutoff". This EPA standard is enforced in the State of Michigan by the Air Quality
Division of the MDEQ.
